Lao She and his flowers
Zuòjiā lǎoshě xiānshēng ài huā,
作家老舍先生爱花，
The writer Mr. Lao She loves flowers.
tā yǎng de huā hěnduō,
他养的花很多，
He raises a lot of flowers,
mǎn mǎn bǎile yī yuànzi.
满满摆了一院子。
and he has a yard full of them.
Kě chúfēi shì nàxiē hǎo zhǒng yì huó, zìjǐ huì fèndòu de huācǎo,
可除非是那些好种易活、自己会奋斗的花草，
But unless it is a kind of flowers and plants that are easy to live and can struggle,
fǒuzé tā shì bù yǎng de.
否则他是不养的。
he will not raise them.
Yīnwèi tā zhīdao Běijīng de qìhòu duì yǎng huā lái shuō,

他不在乎花开得大小好坏，只要开花，他就高兴。

几百盆花，要很快地抢到屋里去，
Hundreds of potted flowers are going to be snatched into the house quickly,
lèi dé yāosuān tuǐ téng, rè hàn zhíliú.
累得腰酸腿疼，热汗直流。
so tired that the waist is sore and the legs aches, and the sweat is hot.
Dì èr tiān, tiānqì hǎole, yòu dé yī pén péndì bān chūqù.
第二天，天气好了，又得一盆盆地搬出去。

Kěshì, tā bìng bù bàoyuàn,
可是，他并不抱怨，

Yǒu de huā xǐ gàn, jiù bié duō jiāo shuǐ;
有的花喜干，就别多浇水；
some flowers like to dry, so don't water them more;
yǒu de huā xǐhuan cháoshī de huánjìng, jiù bié fàng zài tàiyáng dì lǐ.
有的花喜欢潮湿的环境，就别放在太阳地里。
some flowers like humid environments, so don't put them in the sun.
Gěi huā huàn pén jiǎn zhī shīféi de huór tā yuè zuò yuè shúliàn,
给花换盆剪枝施肥的活儿他越做越熟练，

huā shēngbìng chángchong tā yě zhīdao rúhé yìngfùle.

看着院子里那鲜艳的花朵，

lǎoshě zìháo de shuō,

“bùshì luàn chuī, zhè jiùshì zhīshì a!
“不是乱吹，这就是知识啊！
"It's not blowing, this is knowledge!
Duō dé xiē zhīshì, yīdìng bùshì huàishì.”
多得些知识，一定不是坏事。”

Lǎoshě hěn yǒu àixīn, gèng dǒngdé kuàilè yào fēnxiǎng.

Huā fēn gēnle,
花分根了，
The flower is divided into roots,
yī kē fēn wéi jǐ kē,
一棵分为几棵，
and one tree is divided into several trees,
tā huì háo wú bǎoliú de sòng gěi péngyoumen.
他会毫无保留地送给朋友们。
and he will give it to friends without reservation.
Kànzhe yǒurén gāoxìng de ná zǒu zìjǐ de láodòng guǒshí, lǎoshě xīnlǐ shífēn huānxǐ.
看着友人高兴地拿走自己的劳动果实，老舍心里十分欢喜。
