Adding up the load on yourself

Jǐ zìjǐ jiā mǎn shuǐ
Adding up the load on yourself

Yǒuyī wèi jīngyàn fēngfù de lǎo chuánzhǎng,

There was an experienced old captain.

yīcì fǎnháng zhōng, tiānqì èliè,

During a return trip, the weather was bad

tāmen de chuán yù dàole kěpà de jùdà fēnglàng.

and their ship encountered terrible huge waves.

Zhèngdàng shuǐshǒumen huāngzhāng dé bùzhī rúhé shì hǎo shí,

Just as the sailors were panicking and not knowing what to do,

lǎo chuán cháng mìnglìng shuǐshǒumen lìkè dǎkāi huòcāng,

the old captain ordered the sailors to immediately open the cargo hold

shǐjìn er cháo lǐmiàn fàngshuǐ.

and release water into it.

“Chuánzhǎng jiǎnzhí shì fēngle,

“船长简直是疯了,

"The captain is crazy.

zhèyàng zuò zhǐ huì zēngjiā chuán de yālì,

Doing so will only increase the pressure on the ship,

chuán jiù huì xià chén dé gèng kuài,

and the ship will sink faster.

zhè bùshì zhǎosǐ ma?”

Isn't this looking for death?"

Yīgè niánqīng de shuǐshǒu mà dào.

A young sailor scolded.

Kànzhe chuánzhǎng yánsù de biǎoqíng, shuǐshǒumen háishì zhào zuòle.

Seeing the captain's serious expression, the sailors did so.

Suízhe huòcāng lǐ de shuǐwèi yuè shēng yuè gāo,

As the water level in the cargo hold rises higher and higher,

chuán yī diǎn yī diǎn de xiàchén,

the ship sinks bit by bit,

kuángfēng jù làng yīrán měngliè,

the wind and waves are still fierce,

duì chuán de wēixié què jiǎn xiǎole,

but the threat to the ship is reduced,

chuán yě jiànjiàn qǔdéle pínghéng.

and the ship has gradually achieved a balance.

Chuánzhǎng wàngzhe sōngle yī kǒuqì de shuǐshǒumen shuō:

The captain looked at the relieved sailors and said:

“Jǐ wàn dùn de gāngtiě jùlún hěn shǎo yǒu bèi dǎ fān de,

“几万吨的钢铁巨轮很少有被打翻的,

"The huge steel ship of tens of thousands of tons is rarely overturned,

bèi dǎ fān de chángcháng shì gēnjī hěn qīng de xiǎochuán.

and the boats with very light foundations are often overturned.

Chuán zài yǒu yīdìng zhòngliàng de shíhòu shì zuì ānquán de,

A boat is the safest when it has a certain weight,

zài kōng de shíhòu zé shì zuì wéixiǎn de.”

and it is the most dangerous when it is empty.  "

Lìng yīgè xiāngsì de gùshì fāshēng zài mǒu yī zhùmíng fēngjǐng qū,

Another similar story took place in a famous scenic spot,

nà li yǒu yīduàn bèi dāngdì rén chēng wèi “guǐ gǔ” de zuì wéixiǎn de lùduàn,

where there is a section of the most dangerous road called "Ghost Valley" by the locals.

shānlù fēicháng zhǎi, liǎngbiān shì wànzhàng shēnyuān.

The mountain road is very narrow and there is a deep abyss on both sides.

Měi dāng dǎoyóumen dài duì lái zhèli yóulǎn shí,

Whenever tour guides lead a group to visit here,

yīdìng yào ràng yóukèmen bèi diǎn huòzhě ná diǎn shénme dōngxi.

be sure to ask tourists to carry something or pick up something.

“Zhème wéixiǎn de dìfāng,

“这么危险的地方,

"In such a dangerous place,

wǒ bù ná dōngxi liǎng tuǐ dōu fādǒu, zài fùzhòng qián xíng,

if I don't take things, my legs are trembling, and then I carry a heavy load.

nà bùshì gèng róngyì shuāi dǎo ma?”

Wouldn't it be easier to fall?"

Yī wèi fùnǚ bù jiě de wèn.

A woman asked puzzledly.

Dǎoyóu xiǎojiě jiěshì dào:

The tour guide explained:

“Zhèlǐ yǐqián fāshēngguò hǎojǐ qǐ yìwài,

“这里以前发生过好几起意外,

"There have been several accidents here before,

dōu shì mílù de yóukè zài sīháo méiyǒu gǎnjué dào yālì de qíngkuàng xià, yī bù xiǎoxīn gǔn xiàqù de.

all of which were caused by lost tourists who accidentally rolled off without feeling the slightest pressure.

Dāngdì rén měitiān dōu cóng zhè tiáo lùshàng bèizhe dōngxi lái lái wǎngwǎng,

Local people come and go with things on their backs from this road every day,

què cónglái méi rén chūshì.

but no one has ever had an accident.

Jiǎrú nǐ gǎnjué dàole yǒu fēngxiǎn,

If you feel that there is a risk,

jǐnshèn de fùzhòng qián xíng, fǎn'ér huì gèng ānquán.”

it will be safer to move forward cautiously.  "

Zhè jiùshì “yālì xiàoyìng”.

This is the "stress effect".

Nàxiē xiōnghuái lǐxiǎng,

Those who have ideals

jiān shàng yǒu zérèngǎn de rén, cáinéng chéngshòu zhù yālì,

and a sense of responsibility on their shoulders can withstand the pressure

cóng lìshǐ de fēngyǔ zhōng zǒuguò “guǐ gǔ”;

从历史的风雨中走过“鬼谷”;

and walk through the "ghost valley" through the wind and rain of history;

ér nàxiē méiyǒu lǐxiǎng, méiyǒu yīdiǎn yālì,

and those who have no ideals, no pressure,

zuò yītiān héshàng zhuàng yītiān zhōng de rén, jiù xiàng yī sōu fēngbào zhōng de kōng chuán,

and behave as a monk hitting the clock for a day is like an empty ship in a storm,

wǎngwǎng yī chǎng rénshēng de kuángfēng jù làng biàn huì bǎ tāmen chèdǐ de dǎ fān zài dì.

and often a violent wind and waves of life will completely knock them to the ground.
