Sculptures on the mountain range

2010 Nián Zhōngguó xīnán zāoyù bǎiniánbùyù de gānhàn,

In 2010, Southwest China suffered a drought that was unprecedented in a century.

gēngdì shàng, zhuāngjià kūwěi ér sǐ,

On the cultivated land, crops withered and died,

nóngzuòwù dà miànjī juéshōu.

and large areas of crops had no harvest.

Jiù zài gèdì hànqíng yánzhòng,

At a time when drought conditions were severe

rén hé shēngchù yǐnshuǐ dōu nán de shíhòu,

and people and livestock were having trouble drinking water,

diān nán Hónghé Āiláo shān nánbù de yīpiàn piàn tītián zhuànglì yījiù,

the terraced fields in the southern part of the Ailao Mountain of the Red River in southern Yunnan remained magnificent.

tāmen yī shānxíng ér liúzhuàn,

They circulate in the shape of the mountain,

yī piàn piàn, yī céng céng yóu bàn shānyāo yánshēn zhì xiágǔ,

one by one, extending from the mountainside to the gorge.

xiàng yī zhāng zhāng liànglì de yóuhuà, pūtiāngàidì, xíjuǎn ér zhì.

like beautiful oil paintings, sweeping across the sky and the earth.

Wèilán de tiānkōng, piāofú de báiyún,

The blue sky, floating white clouds,

yáobǎi de shù yǐng, gèng chèntuō chū tītián de zhuàngměi.

and swaying tree shadows set off the magnificence of the terraces.

Wǒmen de chē zài dàshān li yánzhe gōnglù pánxuán ér xíng,

Our car circled along the highway in the mountains,

shí'ér xíngshǐ zài shēn shēn de gǔdǐ,

sometimes driving at the bottom of deep valleys,

shí'ér páshēng dào hǎibá yīqiān duō mǐ gāo de shānyāo.

and sometimes climbing to the mountainside more than 1,000 meters above sea level.

Yáowàng shāndǐng, shì dàpiàn de sēnlín,

Looking at the top of the mountain, there is a large forest.

xiágǔ jiān shǎnshǎn fāguāng de shì xiǎo xī, quánshuǐ hé pùbù,

The gorge is sparkling with streams, springs and waterfalls.

bàn shānyāo shì cūnzi,

Halfway through the mountain is the village.

cūnzi xià shì rúshān rú hǎi, zònghéng wànlǐ, xiōngyǒng ér lái de tītián.

Below the village is the turbulent terraced fields that are like mountains and seas.

Jǐnguǎn yǐ mùdǔ zhè qíjī wúshù cì,

Although I have witnessed this miracle countless times,

dàn wǒ měi cì shēn lín qí jìng,

every time I am on the scene,

dōu huì wèi Hānízú shān mínmen zài zhè chóngchóng dié dié de shānmài shàng diāosù chū de měilì huàjuàn ér zhènjīng.

I am shocked by the beautiful scrolls of Hani mountain people sculpted on this overlapping mountain range.

Zhè shì yǐ dàdì wèi bèijǐng, yòng shēngmìng hé yìlì diāokè chū de jiéchū zuòpǐn,

This is an outstanding work carved with life and perseverance on the background of the earth.

tā bǐ wànlǐ chángchéng gèng ràng wǒ zhènhàn,

It shocked me more than the Great Wall,

tā bǐ lìshǐ yōujiǔ de gōngdiàn gèng ràng wǒ gǎndòng.

and moved me more than a palace with a long history.

Wǒ bùjīn wèn zìjǐ, zhèlǐ de rén wéi shénme xuǎnzéle tītián?

I can't help asking myself, why do people here choose terraced fields?

Hòulái, wǒ zài dāngdì tīng dàole yī shǒu gǔlǎo de qǔzi,

Later, I heard an old song in the local area.

gēcí de yìsi shì,

The lyrics meant that

zǔxiānmen zhǐ kào dǎlièguò bu le rìzi, guāng kào cǎijí shù guǒ yěguò bù le rìzi,

the ancestors couldn't live by hunting, and they couldn't live by collecting trees.

yúshì xuéhuìle fān dì, xuéhuìle zhòngzhí.

So I learned how to plow the ground and plant it.

Tāmen fāxiàn zhǒngzǐ hé shuǐ zuì qīnjìn,

They found that seeds are closest to water.

hēguò shuǐ de zhǒngzǐ jiùshì jīn shǎnshǎn de dàogǔ,

The seeds that have drunk water are golden rice.

cóngcǐ tāmen zài yě lì bù kāi tītián hé shuǐ.

From then on, they can no longer do without terraces and water.

Jīngguò shù shí dài rén de qiè'érbùshě,

After decades of perseverance,

tāmen zhōngyú jiāng yīzuò zuò dàshān, diāosù chéngle tītián.

they finally sculpted the mountains into terraces.

Miàn duì dàshān, shān mínmen méiyǒu duìkàng,

In the face of the mountains, the mountain people did not confront,

ér shì xuǎnzéle fúcóng--tāmen fúcóng zìrán guīlǜ,

but chose to obey-they obeyed the laws of nature,

xuǎnzé kāipì tītián zhè zhǒng nónggēng fāngshì,

chose to open up terraces as a farming method,

zuìzhōng yǔ dà zìrán héxié xiāngchǔ.

and finally got along with nature in harmony.

1300 Duōnián,

For more than 1,300 years,

shān mínmen yòng hànshuǐ, yòng xīnxuè,

the mountain people have used sweat, hard work,

yòng rì fù yī rì de xīnqín láodòng wánchéngle shānmài shàng de diāokè,

and day-to-day hard work to complete the carvings on the mountains.

rènhé kùnnán yě zǔlán bùliǎo tāmen.

No difficulty can stop them.

Zhè fú huàjuàn yǐ qí bǎoguì de shēngtài,

This picture scroll is known for its precious ecology,

wénhuà hé shěnměi jiàzhí, zhǎnshìzhe tā de hǎnjiàn hé zhēnxī.

the cultural and aesthetic values show its rarity.

Yǒurén shuō: “Hāní tītián de měijǐng ràng rén táozuì,

Someone said: "The beauty of the Hani terraces is intoxicating.

zhèlǐ de yīqiè wúbù tǐxiànzhe dāngdì bǎixìng yǔ zìrán héxié xiāngchǔ de zhìhuì,

Everything here reflects the wisdom of the local people to live in harmony with nature,

tǐxiànzhe mínzhòng duì zìshēn wénhuà hé zìrán huánjìng de zūnzhòng.

as well as it reflects the people's respect for their own culture and natural environment.

Tā suǒ yùnhán de rén yǔ zìrán gāodù héxié fāzhǎn de gǔlǎo wénhuà tèzhēng, zhèng shì 21 shìjì rénlèi suǒ zhuīqiú de yī zhǒng jīngshén.”

The ancient cultural characteristics of the highly harmonious development of man and nature contained in it are exactly a kind of spirit pursued by mankind in the 21st century.  "

Yěyǒu rén shuō, Hāní tītián “shì rénlèi de bǎoguì yíchǎn,

It is also said that the Hani terraces are "a precious heritage of mankind.
